Lesson 1: The basics

Updated: Oct 22, 2023

Quite a few people have told me they would like to learn more about how astrology works. The easiest way to learn is by doing so this "astrology school" is going to help you learn how to interpret a chart. You can use your own chart or the example that we will use to explain points.

Before we get started, my plan is to start with a basic interpretation of the chart and then as we go through and gain more confidence we can start to put the layers on and find deeper meaning.

When starting to learn astrology there is a tendency to put the chart together like a recipe in a cookbook, looking at interpretations for each planetary placement and then trying to find a coherent narrative as to how it all fits together. While this has it's place while learning, nothing exists in isolation, so for each and everyone of us, a description from the "cookbook" may never work 100% because it is being impacted by the rest of the chart, and how it is impacted will be different for each and every one of us. With this is mind I am going to stay away from lengthy explanations as to what a planet in a particular sign might mean, and lead you more to focussing on how it fits into the whole chart.

To start you will need a copy of your chart. Free charts can be drawn up on a variety of astrological websites - my favourite is www.alabe.com

If you are struggling I can e-mail you a copy of your chart. E-mail me at sacredspaceastrology@outlook.com. I am happy to e-mail a chart for no charge, but advice and interpretation would be via a paid for tutorial. A date, place and time of birth are needed. If you don't know your time of birth a noon chart can be drawn up using 12pm as the birth time.

In order to have an example, we are going to use fictitious Millenium baby's chart, though I am sure somewhere some-one was born at 12am 1st January 2000 in London.

The next step is to decipher the symbols, which are called glyphs. There is a glyph for each astrological sign and for each planet, the sun and the moon.

A very easy to use table can be found on Cafe Astrology using the following link:

Once we know the glyphs we can the see which planets are in which sign which takes us onto the next lesson - the planets and what they represent 🤍

For example for Millenium baby

Sun - Capricorn

Moon - Scorpio

Mercury - Capricorn

Venus - Sagittarius

Mars - Aquarius

Jupiter - Aries

Saturn - Taurus

Uranus - Aquarius

Neptune - Aquarius

Pluto - Sagittarius

Before doing the next session identify which sign each planet, the Sun and the Moon are in, in your chart.
