New Moon in Aquarius - time to look ahead

With this year starting with both Mars and Mercury retrograde it wasn't the best time for starting new things, which is something that New Year is so often associated with. However on the 21st January we have a new Moon, just as the Sun also moves sign into Aquarius. Happily both Mars and Mercury will also be direct at this point. With retrograde lessons learnt, a new Moon and a new sign we can start to look ahead and at new things.

What does Aquarius bring? I think there is a paradox here. Before the discovery of Uranus in 1781, Saturn ruled both Capricorn and Aquarius. As we have seen in the previous blog Saturn is all about responsibility and in Capricorn, our limitations. In Capricorn Saturn gave us structure and it was all about achievement and building. In Aquarius we go beyond our achievements and structure, and look to how we can serve the community. In Aquarius the responsibility is a social responsibility. Represented by the water carrier in the sky, Aquarius is about the greater good and helping others. Charitable works, humanitarian concerns and group activities are all Aquarian.

Following the discovery of Uranus, Aquarius found itself with a modern ruler. Invisible to the naked eye, Uranus represents where we go beyond our limits. Where Saturn is about the past and stability, Uranus is about the future. It was discovered at a time of great social upheaval, with the French revolution and American Wars of Independence happening around that time. So Uranus was thought to bring with it a sense of rebellion, reform and social change. In contrast to Saturn's stability, Uranus turns it all on it's head. Expected the unexpected where Uranus is concerned.

As well as social responsibility, Aquarius also has a rebellious streak. It is inventive and innovative. Ready to try new things. While concerned about the welfare of the group, Aquarius is not concerned with the opinions of others, or more accurately being approved of.

As an air sign for Aquarius it is intellect over emotions. Similar to Capricorn, Aquarius can be considered to be emotionally cold. Due to the natural objectivity of this sign, Aquarians can appear emotionally detached and cerebral.

With the first new Moon of the year in this sign, it is great time, I think, to start something new. It might be something you haven't tried before. Maybe it's taking up a new hobby, a different way of thinking, or volunteering. Whatever feels right for you.

As with all signs balance is needed, and to gain the balance we need to look across the zodiac to the opposing sign, which is Leo. Where Aquarius is focused on the community and the greater good, Leo is focussed on the creativity and expression on the Self. It is good to be concerned with the greater good and the needs of the community, but a bit of Leo, and expression of yourself and your creative talents might be just what the community needs. Without the fire and passion of Leo, Aquarius could be a bit too emotionally detached and cold. The full Moon in this lunar cycle will be in Leo, reflecting the need for warmth, creativity and love to be part of what we do.

Happy New Year and enjoy whatever it is you choose to focus on.

xx
