Sagittarius - the search for the truth

Sagittarius is the 9th sign of the zodiac, the third fire sign and the last sign in autumn (Northern hemisphere). After the releasing and clearing of Scorpio we can gain a clearer idea of what our purpose is and what we believe to be true.

Starting with the element of fire, the fire signs represent our energy and drive, our creativity and sense of adventure. Through from the pure energy of the Self in Aries, through the creativity and expression in Leo, we go on our journey in Sagittarius. Why are we here? What is true for us?

Ruled by Jupiter, the first of the social planets, we go beyond the confines of ourselves and out into the world. Attributes associated with Sagittarius include learning on a higher level to grow, a sense of adventure exploring new horizons, an interest in different cultures and countries, and also religion and philosophy. Being a fire sign there is energy, passion and optimism.

The ninth house in the chart is where we go out into the wider world and look beyond our local environment. Foreign affairs and travel are ninth house matters. Due to the association with the search for the truth, the judiciary, organised religion and higher education are also found in the ninth house.

Of course each sign has its shadow side and Sagittarius is no exception. Sagittarius working less optimally can manifest as dogma, my truth is the only truth. Beliefs can be mistaken for facts. This is where polarity comes in. Each sign in the zodiac requires the opposite sign to bring in balance. In the case of Sagittarius, this is Gemini. Gemini is logical and factual. While Sagittarius thinks in terms of belief and search for the truth, Gemini deals in facts and data. Do the facts support the belief? Sometimes the journey can be lonely without the company of others. Sometimes we need others to challenge what we believe, and Gemini brings this in.

We will all have Sagittarius somewhere in our chart. In each of us there is a desire to find the truth, whatever that might be for us, a need to know more, to see the bigger picture and the whole world. Wherever Sagittarius appears in the chart, is where we seek to meet that need.

If we have planets in Sagittarius, this will be how we express the energies of those planets.

The Sun represents our core and consciousness so a Sagittarius Sun will suggest that the above traits are a bigger part of our journey. If we have a Sagittarius Moon we will be less conscious of these traits perhaps, but we will feel them instinctually. Mercury in Sagittarius suggests that we will see the bigger picture in terms of how we think, and can give some optimism. The downside of this placement (Sagittarius isn't a strong place for Mercury) is that sometimes small print can get overlooked. Venus in Sagittarius will mean we place value on the Sagittarius traits, while Mars suggests this is how we will express our energy.
